Tiffany lamps are often called stained glass lamps. Louis Comfort Tiffany did not have that in mind when he created his very famous lamps. Louis Comfort Tiffany was born in New York in 1848 and died in 1933. He grew up being a painter. He experimented with colored glass during the 1870's and soon after started creating and designing stained glass windows for churches. He hated waste while working on his creations so he devised a way to use the leftover materials from his windows and promptly created the Tiffany lamp. He had no idea that his creations later on would be so greatly admired that they would be reproduced over and over again using his designs.
His head designer, Clara Driscoll. LC Tiffany's head designer until 1909, is now being recognized as being the creative force behind these beautiful and valuable lamps. The style was created in 1895 during the Art Nouveau period.
LC Tiffany created his very favorite type of glass called Favrile. It is taken from the french word Fabrile, which means hand crafted. It is iridescent and a shimmery glass. LC Tiffany trademarked this designed glass in 1894 and started producing 1896. His very first Tiffany lamp was shown in 1899 at a show. Favrile being a shimmering glass came in very bright colors; Gold Luster, Samian red, Mazarin Blue, Turquoise Blue, and Aquamarine.

These days real Tiffany lamps are scarce and costly. There are plenty of reproductions out there calling their products Tiffany. How heartbreaking for LC Tiffany.
