Tiffany Lamps

Do you know much about Tiffany Lamps? You have probably seen them before (or at least a replica) but may not know much about their history or how they came to be such collectible items. These lamp considered not only beautiful pieces of art, but also a wonderful complement to your home. The goal of Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) was "to provide good art for American homes". Tiffany wore many different hats throughout his life.

At various times, he was an interior designer, a painter, a traveler of the world, a collector of beautiful objects, a manufacturer of various items, a photographer capturing beautiful images, as well as a gardener. He is often viewed as one of the most prominent American artists, designers, and craftsmen of his time, and the lamps he created were and are still known across the globe for their wonderful design quality and fabulous handcrafted details.

Louis was the oldest son of Charles Lewis Tiffany, the founder of Tiffany and Co., the well-known silver and jewelry store. However, Louis decided to go after his love affair with the arts instead of following in the family tradition. He did quite well with his watercolor and oil paintings during the 1860s and into the 1870s. It wasn't until the 1880s, though, that he shifted his focus to interior design, where he stayed focused on until his end days.

As it may be apparent, Tiffany had a desire to make the decorative arts as high in status as the fine arts. He wanted to make aesthetic beauty popular. Tiffany came up with an idea to combine small pieces of glass that were left over from remains from his stained glass lamp window production to make these pretty and decorative lamps. It just so happens that while he was doing lighting for the first ever movie theater, Louis joined up with Thomas Edison. Edison came up with the idea that they create light fixtures together. Not long after that, Tiffany started developing lamps that were miniature versions of his gorgeous stained glass windows, thereby turning his idea into a brand new art form that remains to this day.
