Satsuma Vases

In the very late 16th century, himazu Yoshihiro, the current lord of the Satsuma region returned from Korea bringing with him a collection of potters who would go on to produce the pottery that the region is now so famous for. Although these Koreans were brought against their will to work in Japan, they arrived with tools and equipment to begin the production of the pottery.

Using local brown clay, the potters began to produce a style of pottery that was somewhere between the properties of being earthenware and porcelain. Cooked in a slow kiln, they perfected this style which was later mass produced and distributed all over the world. The Satsuma pottery is also famous for its intricate and unique artwork, enameling and designs that adorn the faces and surfaces of each piece.

Two types of Satsuma pottery are available, black or white. The white pottery is a creamy or off white color and is the most common, but there is also a black version which was used by the lower classes of people. The potters making the white pottery had to seek authorization from the local lords before making any of the pottery, such was it’s value then.

Satsuma Vases are often sold in pairs and can measure up to 1 meter in height although it is more common for the vases to be smaller – approximately 30 to 40 inches. The vases also come in a variety of shapes and widths too, with some being smaller and of a more squat design.

As with all of the other Japanese Satsuma pottery from the same region and the same time period, the satsuma vases were highly decorated and feature some of the best artwork on pottery the world has ever seen. The images depict the life and times of Japan in the 18th to 19th century, showing people, places, flowers, animals, plants or landscapes – all in glorious detail and immaculate imagery. The detailed hand painting that went into making these objects must have taken the artisans many hours to complete. The designs on the vases are definitely one of the things that makes them so popular all over the world.
