How to rock the velvet trend form head to toe

We already talked about it, remember? In a previous post of trends for this fall we discussed velvet as the ‘it-fabric’ this season. Making a comeback in this 90’s fever we’ve been living lately. Back in the day, this material was somehow ‘reserved’ for gothic, dark aesthetics or for those occasions in where you wanted to channel your inner renaissance girl.

However, these days everything is different. A very good number of designers and brands decided that incorporate this fabric on their collections, but they didn’t do it in a shy way at all. From Balmain and Haider Ackermann to Isabel Marant and TopShop there’s an option for you to wear: tops, dresses, pants, shoes… if you can think about it, you’ll have in velvet.

And as it happens every time there’s a new trend, people have been overreacting a little bit. Whether is wearing it head to toe or mixing it with the wrong accessories, rules need to be stated. And for those who haven’t step into it yet, it can be a guide for you to go and try.

Use it with moderation

If you’re not someone particularly bold, maybe head to toe velvet is not the best thing to start with. What you can do is try different things until you feel comfortable and chic because, after all, that’s what fashion is for. Look for a simple top paired with jeans, or an accessory like a choker or a headband. For those ones who want to take it a little bit higher, a short dress might be the option. With this last option be careful, because a dress with tiny straps and accessories that look to 90’s can make you look like coming back in the time machine.

Mix and match

Texture is one of the biggest charms when it comes to velvet. Of course, it is a risky option per se, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add more texture to the mix. What about a little black dress with the touch of a velvet burgundy jacket? Or a skirt with a denim dress? I’ve even seen this two cold weather favorites working together with really nice results: velvet and leather. Remember, it’s all about how you feel comfortable and better. And despite this ‘rule’, if you’re bold enough to wear a velvet long gown, try to let it shine on its own.

Wear the shoes

This is definitely my favorite way to wear velvet this season. Shoes can never be too much and it’s easier to carry the trends on your feet. You’ve been seeing a lot of tall ankle boots in our favorite girls, like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid (those two can rock any trend, huh?) but the best piece you can get this season is a pair over the knee boots in this fabric. It will take any simple outfit and make it pop out of the crowd. With velvet stay away from the basics, not black nor gray, try something really cool like burgundy, green or red.

The pastels

We are used to seeing this material in all shade of dark colors. But the good news is that the runway just gave us a very wide range of options to choose. My favorite, of course, is the burgundy (it shines like no other), but pastel tones are giving us a surprise by showing how good they look in a velvety texture. If you don’t want to look too ‘soft’, pair it with accessories or other pieces with a little bit of a masculine accent. You will look like a princess that’s able to teach a lesson to anyone who dares to ask.

Accessorize it

Accessories are always important, no matter which outfit or style you choose to wear. Being the tricky fabric that it is, velvet it’s also difficult when comes to accessorize because the material itself steals all the thunder of the outfit. However, you can do it successfully if you start from the premise of keeping it simple. Don’t try to play with big pieces or too much of them, give the importance to velvet and start from there. A simple necklace, a pair of earrings or a cocktail ring if night is the occasion. One important tip: velvet and metallic are a match made in heaven.
