In the beginning, the discipline of fashion design involved the creation of attractive apparel but over the years it has started to encompass almost everything that had to do with a person’s appearance. It was also during this time that haute couture dominated the fashion scene. Haute couture refers to the design and creation of custom-made apparel. The mass production of clothes followed soon thereafter and fashion became even more accessible to more people. The Future of Fashion Design Fashion design has become a formidable industry which a lot of young designers aspire to be part of. Aside from designing, there are various other career opportunities that are now available. If the creation of garments is not your thing, you can go into fashion photography or styling. The business side of fashion is also rife with possibilities with careers in fashion merchandising and fashion buying. Fashion designers continue to come up with innovative concepts in an effort to keep diversifying the industry. These days, green fashion is gaining more popularity as people are becoming more environment-conscious. Designers are exploring the use of organic materials in their clothing, as well as adopting manufacturing processes that make less of a negative impact on the environment. Technology also seems to figure in increasingly in the industry not only as a design accessory but also as a means of making business operations more efficient. The idea of wearable technology has emerged as another facet of fashion design with things such as mobile phone and CDs used as fashion accessories. Innovations such as design and virtual fitting software help designers create images more efficiently. There have also been explorations into the use of space technology in clothing fabrics.

What is the exact definition of fashion? Nobody is able to provide the most content answer! We are likely to call something such as styles and customs prevalent at a given time fashion. However, fashion is more described as the popular clothing style in its most common usage nowadays.

Different kinds of fashions are welcomed in many cultures at different given time. What seems more significant is the idea that the course of design and fashion will carry on in a much faster speed than the whole culture. This is the base of success for a certain fashion absolutely. As for fashion followers, are you ready to change more quickly than culture around you?

Considering fashion as a social phenomenon is common at present, which includes architecture, interior and landscape design, arts and crafts, body type, clothing, cosmetics, personal grooming, hairstyle and personal adornment, entertainment, fast fashion, social networks and so on. Is there any item dominative at any time? I am glad to hear this question from one college student. What is your idea? No matter what answer you will give to me, I have to admit the answer to this question is absolutely positive! Is there anybody who does not care clothing, changes, media?

Clothing seems lying in the front place on the fashion market all the time. An interesting investigation by some historians on the continuously changing clothing styles among urban populations was carried out years ago, whose result astonished people completely—people change their clothing as a distinctively habit! Is this incredible? Anyway, it proves the reality that nobody is willing to remain the same image all the time! In front of fashion, everybody is equal absolutely! Why I place changes on such a fashion range? Don’t they seem unrelated at all? No! Changes are the most basic energy in fashion. There is no doubt paying attention to changes on fields of human activity, fashion embodiments, people’s desires and so on functions like injecting some active force in fashion. Who dominates the changes in fashion? Are they fashion houses or their associated fashion designers, or well-known celebrities? Who knows? In any case, impact of such changes depends on many aspects like economic status.

Media plays the same role with social, political and cultural in affecting how fashion is viewed! Brooke Kelley, a fashion editor, pointed out an effect in the industry that TV, magazines and blogs dictating to the consumers what to wear. It is right to wear according to information you get from the media because it turned out as a result of research of popular ideas among the people.

What Is Fashion Design?

Fashion design is a form of art dedicated to the creation of clothing and other lifestyle accessories. Modern fashion design is divided into two basic categories: haute couture and ready-to-wear. The haute couture collection is dedicated to certain customers and is custom sized to fit these customers exactly. In order to qualify as a haute couture house, a designer has to be part of the Syndical Chamber for Haute Couture and show a new collection twice a year presenting a minimum of 35 different outfits each time.

Ready-to-wear collections are standard sized, not custom made, so they are more suitable for large production runs. They are also split into two categories: designer/createur and confection collections. Designer collections have a higher quality and finish as well as an unique design. They often represent a certain philosophy and are created to make a statement rather than for sale. Both ready-to-wear and haute-couture collections are presented on international catwalks.

Who Invented It?

The first fashion designer who was more than a simple seamster was Charles Frederick Worth, in the 19th century. Before he set up his fashion design house in Paris, clothing was made by anonymous dressmakers and fashion standards were derived from the styles worn by royalty. Worth was the first designer to actually dictate to his customers what to wear rather than following their demands.

His fashion house became so famous that people were able to attach a face and a name to designs when they knew they were from the House of Worth. This was the beginning of the tradition to have a designer of a house not only create clothing, but also represent the symbol of the brand.

What Does It Take To Be A Fashion Designer?

Fashion design is a form of art. To work as a designer, you should have an artistic and creative personality. You also have to be good at drawing and able to express your ideas in sketches. You don’t necessarily have to be a great artist, but you must have some special skills for combining colors, tones and shades. You also have to be able to work with fabric and use textiles in a creative and original manner. Fashion designers have a good visual imagination and are able to think in three-dimensions and put their ideas into garments.

Fashion designers have to be aware of the fashion market requirements. They have to be very interested in learning new things and read magazines, journals and books on fashion design history and new trends. They also have to be interested in art, visit art galleries and interact with all kinds of artists whenever they have the opportunity. A designer should also have some knowledge and experience of tailoring (cutting, draping, sewing etc.) and be able to tell the difference between different fabric quality levels.

A good understanding of the audience’s lifestyle and customer needs and requirements is also needed in fashion design. Designers should have good communication skills and be able to express their ideas clearly. But most important, they have to be very original and have fresh, innovative ideas.

The fashion gods have spoken.  Two of the hottest trends for this spring are the sporty look and the maxi dress with high splits.  Here are some ideas for wearing these two chic new fads.

Light, airy fabrics are showcased in maxi dresses this year as opposed to the heavier fabrics of the short thigh high styles from last year.  The sex appeal of the dresses resides in their high slits, sometimes reaching to the top of the thigh or hip.  “Movement and flow are a big part of the charm” as well.  Look for dresses with a center split, a single side split, or if you are really daring, dual side splits.  Flat shoes are really not the best choice for accessorizing this trend, so pull your sexiest heels out of the closet and let them shine.  Bare legs, thigh highs, or interesting stockings such as fishnet are all sultry choices to wear with a high slit.  For any weddings, parties, or special occasions you might have, this is the perfect trend to wear.

The sporty trend is a little more difficult to pull off since there isn’t one basic characteristic you can look for.  The upside of this is the versatility and ability to pull off this look with items already in your closet.  The sporty trend falls into four simple categories according to fashion experts, “the tomboy, the sporty flapper, the urban dancer, and the Bond bombshell.”  On the casual-to-formal scale, this fad falls somewhere between gym wear and weekend, glamorous casual.

Knee high socks instantly add a sporty vibe to many outfits, so incorporating them is a great idea.  Cross lacing, similar to baseball gloves, boot laces, and footballs is another characteristic to look for in tops, shoes, and as an embellishment.  Side braids are a great way to suggest cross lacing without aggrandizement.  Mesh fabrics, such as those worn by basketball or soccer players is a cool and comfortable fabric to add to your wardrobe.  Shoulder pads can recall football players, while cut off tees make one think of cheerleaders.

“The cool factor” of the tomboy sporty look “is engineered by way of cropped tops, pants low slung to expose the waistband of an under-layer; leather cross-lacing, jersey fabrics, football-style shoulders. Woven into the effortless tomboy look are super-feminine elements like sheer fabrics and high heeled shoes, placing the look firmly in 2010.”  The confident, fun-loving, happy-go-lucky spirit of the tomboy shines through the sporty trend.  Drop waist skirts and pleats fall into the realm of the sporty flapper.  An athletic, yet seductive figure, the flapper is enthusiastic about life.  Sweats are given a girly, yet urban spin with ballet pinks used in skinny pants and slouchy hoodies.  The urban dancer is reminiscent of the “Step Up” movies with their incredible dancing married to the coolness of the street.

Fashion – Catalyst For Social Change

Midway through the last century, fashion and style began to take on a much more complex connection to the social issues of the day. When the Beatles exploded on the scene in the early 60’s, style became much more tightly connected to point of view and political persuasion than at any time in the past. As time has gone on, the fashion world has been increasingly vocal about many of the social problems of the day.

One of the first points of contact between fashion and social issues was the Vietnam War and the developing opposition to that conflict. Invariably, those strongly opposed to the war wore their hair long and favored tie-dyed “hippie” clothes while those who supported the conflict wore their hair short and chose clothes that were much more conservative in nature.

When the opposition succeeded in hastening an end to the Vietnam conflict, it seemed only natural that these activists (as they were now called) would turn their attention to other pressing social issues and style and fashion offered several flashpoints which could be exploited.

Animal rights activists came down hard on the fashion industry for supporting the cruel capture and killing of animals in order to support many of the popular styles of the day including furs, minks and other clothing. This led to a number of consumer boycotts and those wearing the clothing were often confronted on the street.

It was about this time that Hollywood began to inject itself much more strongly into social issues and thus began a long line of actors and actresses who would take strong stands on these issues and again, the fashion world was the perfect target.

When the United States began to lose its’ once predominant position in the textile industry, most of the industry shifted to lesser developed parts of the world where working conditions often approached “sweatshop” status. With Hollywood taking the lead, consumers boycotted many of the companies that used these ill-treated workers to make the garments and, in many cases, succeeded in changing company policy. This type of boycott was especially successful in getting companies to stop doing business with areas of the world that employed child labor under unusually harsh conditions.

In today’s world, fashion is becoming more closely aligned with the Green movement and it is becoming fashionable these days to be “eco-chic” and this trend appears to be gaining momentum. As consumers become more educated about the complexities of the garment business, they will want to know about all the details that are involved in getting clothing to the marketplace and will expect to get the same level of transparency from clothing companies that they now expect from the food industry.

Fashion and style, in the past, were all about creating an image but now that image can also include the personal value set of the wearer and it looks as if this connection between fashion and social issues is here to stay.

Many of us think that fashion applies just the clothes we wear, but in actual fact it can be applied to almost anything we do. Fashion is used to describe a means of expression. The terms “fashionable” and “unfashionable” are used to describe something that does or does not tally with the current popular mode of expression. However, when celebrities or people in the public eye start to wear new or different clothes, people tend to copy them and a new fashion develops, therefore the original term may still apply today.
Fashion is something that varies tremendously, not just in different eras, but also in the same generation but between different ages, social classes, professions and by location. The term “fashionista” has developed in the 21st century as a way of describing someone who is dedicated to fashion, and the development of this term is indicative of the role fashion and trends play in the contemporary age.
Fashion by its very nature, is something that is continually changing, and when applied to clothes this happens even more quickly than in other areas of social behaviour. What is an interesting phenomenon in regards to clothing fashions is that whilst something quickly becomes out of fashion, it can become fashionable again at a later date when these clothes come back into fashion again. This is something that is seen predominantly only with clothes, and not with other areas of design or human actions.
Every part of one’s appearance is subject to fashion, from makeup, hair, length of skirts, and accessories, nothing is left untouched. Fashion houses and their fashion designers, as well as their celebrity clients are key in determining how clothes fashions change and how quickly. They are also the main force behind determining if something is in or out of fashion and if to bring something back in to fashion. An important part of fashion is fashion journalism, and this can be found in every magazine, newspaper, and television article around, as well as in fashion websites and blogs. This is demonstrated by the fact that Vogue, founded in the US in 1902, is now one of the longest-lasting and most popular magazines in the world, and has spurned international editions around the globe. Despite the advent of television and widespread internet coverage, press coverage is still seen by the fashion industry as the most important form of publicity in conveying the new fashion trends to society.

It will receive unanimous acceptance when one says that something that is beautiful or desired is bound to have an enormous effect on the people’s lives; whether they are conscious about it or not.
